Ulysse Nardin has a dual and contradictory history — almost two centuries of nautical chronometers for navies worldwide, followed by a renaissance in the 1990s as a laboratory for avant-garde haute horlogerie. These two souls coexist in every watch produced in Le Locle.
Le Locle, 1846: the chronometers that guided ships
Ulysse Nardin founded his manufacture in Le Locle in 1846 with a precise goal: to build nautical chronometers of absolute precision for the world's navies. His chronometers won 4,304 awards at international precision competitions throughout the 19th and 20th centuries — a record unmatched by any other chronometer maker.
In the 1980s, the market for nautical chronometers disappeared with the advent of GPS, and Ulysse Nardin was going through a deep crisis. Then came Rolf Schnyder, a Swiss entrepreneur who bought back the brand and transformed it into something completely different — without, however, erasing its roots.
In 1989, Ulysse Nardin presented the Trilogy of Time — three astronomical watches of extraordinary mechanical complexity that propelled the brand directly to the forefront of global haute horlogerie. In 2006, silicon arrived: Ulysse Nardin was one of the first brands in the world to use silicon components for its movements, paving a way that many others would follow.
The Freak, launched in 2001, is even more revolutionary: no dial, no traditional hands — the carousel of bridges is the time display and rotates around the central axis every hour. It is an object that redefines the very concept of a watch. And even today, more than twenty years later, no other brand has replicated it with the same consistency.
