IWC Schaffhausen:
Swiss engineering
with an American soul
IWC originated from a fascinating paradox: an American engineer who went to Switzerland to make watches in a way no European would have dared. The result is a manufacture that still stands out for its technical rigor, generous dimensions, and an elegance that isn't afraid of substance.
Schaffhausen, 1868: an American in Switzerland
Florentine Ariosto Jones is an American watchmaker from Boston with a precise vision: to bring American industrial methods — more efficient, more scalable — to Swiss watchmaking. In 1868, he chose Schaffhausen, a city on the Rhine in German-speaking Switzerland, for a practical reason: the Rhine Falls provided abundant hydraulic energy to power machinery. It was an engineering intuition applied to the choice of a location.
IWC — International Watch Company — was born this way: as an American industrial experiment on Swiss soil. Jones failed to make the venture profitable and left in 1875, but the foundations he laid — integrated manufacturing, mechanical precision as an absolute value — would forever remain in the brand's DNA.
IWC is the only major Swiss watch manufacture located in German-speaking Switzerland — outside the traditional Vallée de Joux and Neuchâtel region. This geographical position has helped to shape a different character: more engineering-focused, less decorative, more attentive to function than to ornamentation.
Today, IWC is part of the Richemont group — alongside Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, and Jaeger-LeCoultre — but maintains a completely autonomous manufacture in Schaffhausen, where it internally develops most of its calibers. It is one of the most respected brands in the world for the technical quality of its movements and the consistency with which it has built its lines over time.
The major watch families
Pilot's Watch
The most iconic and beloved line. Created in the 1930s for Lufthansa pilots, it brings the entire legacy of military aviation into contemporary wristwear — large and legible cases, crown with anti-accidental system, cockpit-style dials. The Big Pilot is among the most desired watches in the world.
Aviation · IconicPortofino
IWC's most elegant and discreet soul. Thin round cases, clean dials, timeless classic character. The Portofino is for those who want to wear the maison's manufacturing quality in formal settings — under a cuff, at dinner, in a boardroom. Refined without being ostentatious.
Elegant · FormalAquatimer
The IWC diving watch — internal rotating bezel system, high resistance, robust character. The Aquatimer brings the brand's engineering philosophy to the underwater environment, with original technical solutions and a significant wrist presence.
Diving · TechnicalIngenieur
The brand's technical manifesto — born in 1955 as an anti-magnetic watch for engineers and scientists. The Ingenieur line incorporates the same priorities that guide the manufacture into its design: function before aesthetics, robustness before ornamentation, engineering as a visual language.
Engineering · Anti-magneticEvery line bears the same internal signature: movements developed and produced in-house, finishes on par with the great names of haute horlogerie, a constant preference for generous cases that convey the weight and substance of the watch on the wrist.
Substance first and foremost
IWC has never been a brand that seeks visibility at all costs. It builds serious watches, with serious movements, for people who appreciate seriousness. And over time, the market has rewarded it with rare loyalty. For the collector who has already explored watchmaking and is looking for something technically sound, historically relevant, and aesthetically coherent, IWC is almost always on the shortlist.
