Zell am See, 1972: when design becomes discipline
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche — the designer of the legendary Porsche 911 — founded Porsche Design in 1972 in Zell am See, Austria. The motivation was precise: he wanted to create functional design objects that had nothing to do with ostentation or decoration for its own sake. Objects that were exactly what they seemed — no more, no less.
The first product from the studio was a watch: the Chronograph I, presented in 1972. It was entirely black — case, dial, hands, strap. In an era when all luxury watches were polished steel or gold, this dark, silent object was an aesthetic shock. The choice of black was not provocative: it was functional. The PVD-coated titanium does not reflect dazzling light, does not disturb readability, does not draw attention to itself — it only allows the time to be read as clearly as possible.
The 1972 Chronograph I is now considered by designers and design historians to be one of the most influential objects of the twentieth century. In 2015, Porsche Design and IWC Schaffhausen — with whom the brand had collaborated since the 1970s for the production of movements — separated. Porsche Design began producing its own watches through a dedicated manufacture, maintaining the same founding philosophy but with greater design and technical autonomy.
