Panerai:
Florence, the Sea,
the Navy Divers

Panerai is the only major luxury watch brand with authentically Italian roots — born in Florence, raised in the depths of the Mediterranean with the Royal Italian Navy divers, and discovered by the world only in the 1990s. A story that seems made up, but it's all true.

Florence, 1860: a nautical school with a secret

Giovanni Panerai opened his workshop on Lungarno Corsini in Florence in 1860. It was a shop for nautical and scientific instruments — compasses, sextants, measuring tools — and quickly became the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy. He wasn't just a merchant: he was a technician, an innovator, the man the Navy turned to when it needed reliable instruments for operations in extreme conditions.

Throughout the twentieth century, Panerai developed a series of watches for the Italian Navy's special underwater units — the divers who, in secret missions during World War II, infiltrated enemy bases aboard slow-moving torpedoes, attacking enemy warships in the ports of Alexandria and Gibraltar. These watches had to be legible in the dark, withstand enormous pressures, and function with absolute precision in life-or-death situations.

For decades, Panerai watches were classified as military secrets. They could not be bought by private individuals, they could not be photographed, they could not be shown in public. Their existence was known only to the military personnel who wore them. This history of secrecy is an integral part of the brand's allure.

Only in 1993 did Panerai begin selling watches to the public — with the first civilian collection presented in Geneva. The market responded with immediate and visceral enthusiasm. Enthusiasts worldwide discovered a brand with an authentic military history, case sizes never seen before (44mm was huge at the time), and an aesthetic that resembled no other Swiss or Italian watch on the market.

The great watch families

Luminor

Panerai's most recognizable signature — the crown protection device, that bridge structure that protects the winding crown and locks it in place. It's not decorative: it's a functional element created to prevent divers from accidentally opening the case underwater. Today, it is the brand's symbol.

Iconic · Military

Radiomir

The original model — the one delivered to Navy divers in 1936. Cushion case, crown without protection device, a more subdued and archaic design than the Luminor. The Radiomir is Panerai in its purest and most historically accurate form — for collectors who want the piece closest to the original.

Heritage · 1936

Submersible

The sportiest and most contemporary line — designed for serious diving with high resistance, high-performance materials like titanium and ceramic, and a more aggressive character than the historical lines. The Submersible is Panerai for those who want to use the watch, not just wear it.

Diving · Performance

Goldtech and Platinumtech

The proprietary alloys developed by Panerai — red gold with increased surface hardness, platinum with optimized composition. These are the brand's haute horlogerie offerings: pieces for serious collectors, with refined complications and exclusive materials produced in-house by the Neuchâtel manufacture.

Haute Horlogerie · Collectors

Every Panerai carries with it that story of the sea, of darkness, of secret missions. It's not marketing — it's a documented heritage that you feel when you hold the case, look at the dial, read the large numbers and luminous hands designed to be seen thirty meters underwater.

The Italian that the world has come to love

Since 1997, Panerai has been part of the Richemont group. The acquisition brought resources to develop an in-house manufacture in Neuchâtel, where the proprietary P. calibers that equip the top models are now produced. For the Italian public, Panerai has an added value that no other luxury watch brand can offer: it is ours. Born in Florence, raised with the Italian Navy, it became famous worldwide while maintaining unequivocally Italian roots and character.

What it means to buy it from LuxuryInStock

The Panerai watches available in our stock come from authorized Italian retailers with unsold inventory. They are new, unworn pieces, complete with original box and papers, with an active official brand warranty. Panerai is one of the brands with the highest secondary market demand — finding it new, certified, and below list price is an opportunity that rarely comes along through traditional channels.

For those who have always seen Panerai as the quintessential Italian brand — the one with the most authentic history, the most recognizable cases, the character hardest to ignore — stock is the most direct path. Florence, the sea, the Navy divers. On the wrist, at real conditions.
