Baume & Mercier:
the art of making the right watches
Not all great Swiss brands aim for extreme luxury. Baume & Mercier chose a different path — and for that reason, it has survived, loved and respected for almost two centuries.
A history that began in 1830
It all began in Les Bois, in the heart of the Swiss Jura, when Louis-Victor Baume opened a small watchmaking manufacture. This was in 1830. The Swiss watchmaking industry was still artisanal, consisting of workshops and masters passing down the secrets of the trade. In those years, making a precise watch was not a matter of marketing — it was a matter of honor.
In 1918, William Baume joined forces with Paul Mercier, a Parisian businessman with a taste for elegance and an eye for the market. Thus, Baume & Mercier was born. This partnership combined Swiss technical precision with French aesthetic sensibility — a combination that would forever define the brand's DNA.
"Only forgo the futile, never economize on the essential." This is the original motto of the Maison. A philosophy that still guides every watch produced in Geneva today.
Since 1988, the brand has been part of the Richemont Group — the same constellation that houses Cartier, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Vacheron Constantin. Yet Baume & Mercier has maintained its own distinct identity: not to compete with the giants of haute horlogerie, but to offer the best of Swiss watchmaking to those who want true quality without paying for the name of a trophy watch.
The major watch families
Over the decades, Baume & Mercier has built several collections that have become recognizable benchmarks, each with a well-defined character.
Clifton
The classic heart of the brand. Inspired by the 1960s, the Clifton is a wristwatch in the noblest sense of the term: round, elegant, without excess. It is available in automatic versions, with moon phases, and with chronographs.
Classic · VersatileClassima
The most understated of the family. Clean lines, a slim case, an uncluttered dial. The Classima is the watch for those who already know what they want — and don't need to prove it. Suitable for both men and women.
Minimal · RefinedHampton
The rectangular case is the unmistakable signature of this line. Inspired by Art Deco and the exclusive destinations of the 1930s, the Hampton brings a different elegance — more angular, more theatrical, for those who love to stand out without shouting.
Art Deco · OriginalRiviera
Introduced in the 1970s as a sport-chic watch, the Riviera features an integrated bracelet with a pentagonal shape that makes it immediately recognizable. Lively, modern, with a more contemporary personality.
Sport-chic · ContemporaryEach of these lines expresses a different nuance of the same character — a brand that does not want to be everything to everyone, but wants to be something specific for those who choose it.
Why it makes sense to buy it from stock
Baume & Mercier is distributed through a selected network of authorized Italian retailers. As is the case with all brands belonging to large luxury groups, official dealers are bound by strict pricing policies and purchasing obligations that lead them, over time, to accumulate unsold inventory — perfect, new pieces, in original boxes, that simply were not sold within the expected timeframe.
For those who appreciate the quality of Swiss watchmaking but do not want to spend what the name of a higher-end brand would dictate, Baume & Mercier represents one of the smartest choices. And buying it through a selected stock makes it even more sensible.
